Garage door openers fail in a few familiar ways. They hum but don't move, click without starting, reverse for no obvious reason, run and stop halfway, or simply go quiet. Some of these are the motor itself; many are not.
Before recommending a new opener we test the parts around it: the power supply, the drive gear or belt, the logic board, the limit settings and the safety beams. A door that's out of balance can also make a healthy motor look sick, so we check the door as well.
When to call us
- The motor hums but the door doesn't move
- The door reverses before it closes
- It stops partway on every cycle
- The light flashes and nothing happens
- Grinding or chattering from the motor unit
How we do it
- Test the door firstWe disconnect the opener and check the door moves freely and balances by hand.
- Diagnose the openerPower, gears, belt or chain, board, limits and beams are each checked in turn.
- Repair or adviseIf a part is available and the opener is sound, we repair it. If it isn't worth it, we say so and price a replacement.
- Reprogram and testLimits, force and remotes are set and the safety reverse is tested.
Near the beach?
Salt air and moisture find their way into exposed circuit boards and connectors, especially in garages that open straight onto the sea breeze. Keeping the door closed when not in use helps more than most people expect.
Garage door motor repairs questions
Is it worth repairing an old opener?
If parts are still available and the motor is sound, often yes. If the opener is very old or parts are hard to get, a new one may be better value. We'll show you both prices.
Why does my door reverse when it closes?
Usually the safety beams are dirty, blocked or misaligned. Wipe the two small lenses near the floor first. If it continues, the force setting or the door's balance needs attention.
Do you repair all brands?
We work on most openers used in homes on the Gold Coast. Tell us the make and model when you call and we'll confirm.
What's your door doing?
Pick the closest match for the likely cause, whether it's safe to use, and the usual fix.
Won't open or close
Check the power point and the remote battery first. If the motor runs but the door doesn't move, a spring or cable has probably failed.
- Right now
- Don't force it open by hand.
- Usual fix
- Spring, cable or motor repair, usually on the first visit.
